The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A man says: ‘My wealth, my wealth,’ but all he has of his wealth is three things: what he consumes and it is used up, what he wears and it wears out, and what he gives and it is stored up. As for everything else, he will depart and leave it for other people.”
— Sahih Muslim 7422
💰 True Wealth in Islam: What Really Belongs to You?
In this eye-opening hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ dismantles the illusion of ownership that many people carry. The focus keyword — true wealth in Islam — is not what fills your account, closet, or land registry. It is what you consume, use, or give in charity. Everything else? It stays behind when you return to the soil.
🌍 “My Wealth, My Wealth…” – A Delusion of Ownership
We hear people proudly say, “My house,” “My car,” “My savings.” But the Prophet ﷺ reminds us: you only own three things from all your possessions:
-
🍽️ What you eat — and it is digested and gone.
-
👕 What you wear — and it fades and wears out.
-
👐 What you give for the sake of Allah — and that is what truly lasts.
The rest? It will be enjoyed by others — your heirs, strangers, or even your enemies. You worked hard for it… but it wasn’t really yours.
🕊️ Wealth That Follows You to the Grave
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jāriyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him.”
— Sahih Muslim 1631
Only what you give, what you build, and what you leave in service to others will follow you into your grave. That is true wealth in Islam.
⚖️ Wealth Is a Test – Not a Sign of Success
Allah ﷻ says:
“Know that your wealth and your children are only a test…”
— Surah Al-Anfal 8:28
Wealth is a tool, not a trophy. If used for halal, it blesses you. If hoarded or spent in haram, it becomes a source of regret on the Day of Judgment.
True wealth in Islam is not how much you have, but what you do with what you have.
✅ How to Align Your Wealth with Islam
📌 Give Regularly – Set a goal for daily, weekly, or monthly sadaqah.
📌 Invest in Akhirah Projects – Qur’an printing, water wells, education.
📌 Avoid Extravagance – Simplicity is from the Sunnah.
📌 Write Your Will – Ensure your wealth benefits after your death.
📌 Purify It – Always calculate and give zakah on time.
💎 Reflection: What Will You Take with You?
One day, your account will close, your clothes will rot, and your property will be sold. Only what you gave will remain — written in your book of deeds and waiting for you in the Akhirah.
The Prophet ﷺ showed us the reality behind the illusion: true wealth in Islam is not what we possess, but what we send forward.
